91²Ö¿â Alumni to Pilot Goodyear Blimp at Aeronautics and Engineering Expo

The skies over 91²Ö¿â's Airport will feature a unique homecoming this weekend as three alumni return to pilot the Goodyear Blimp during the Aeronautics and Engineering Expo (A&E Expo) from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. on Sept. 7

Michael Dougherty, Adam Basaran and Jessica Miladinovich, all graduates of 91²Ö¿â's professional pilot program, will showcase their skills at the helm of the iconic airship. The event, hosted by the College of Aeronautics and Engineering, combines vintage and modern aviation with STEM activities for families.

Dougherty, a 2003 graduate and now chief pilot for Goodyear Airship Operations, credits 91²Ö¿â for instilling crucial skills. "During my tenure at 91²Ö¿â, I gained many career-advancing skills and connections that have really carried me through my aviation journey," he said. "Not the least of these skills being a tenacious drive, passion for the career and work ethic that keeps me focused forward even during rough cycles in our industry."

91²Ö¿â's innovative approach to pilot training played a crucial role in Dougherty's career. This program, he explained, "prepares new budding aviators to be successful in a professional pilot career with the airlines or corporate aviation department."

For recent 2023 graduate Miladinovich, 91²Ö¿â's preparation was fundamental. "91²Ö¿â did a great job of preparing me for a real pilot job, and I wouldn't have been able to do it without the skills that I learned throughout my time there," she said. "There are certain things in aviation that will never leave. Things like weather, regulations, general aircraft systems and even the soft skills of being professional are things that I learned at 91²Ö¿â that have been absolutely essential."

The transition from fixed-wing aircraft to blimps presented unique challenges. Miladinovich noted, "Flying the blimp is quite different from flying fixed-wing airplanes. The differences can go from the amount of crew involved in us flying all the way to how the ship handles itself."

Attendees can expect to see the Goodyear Blimp moored and, weather permitting, performing aerial maneuvers over the 91²Ö¿â Airport on Saturday.

For Miladinovich, piloting the Blimp over her alma mater is a full-circle moment. "Being able to share the love and joy I have for the Blimp with the current students at 91²Ö¿â is an opportunity I'm really grateful for," she said.

Dougherty emphasizes the importance of connections and adaptability in aviation careers. "My connections with the other Goodyear pilots and my knowledge from 91²Ö¿â led me to flying with the blimp team from time-to-time and building a career-advancing connection that paid off in 2007 when I was hired by Goodyear as a full-time pilot with the Airship Operations team!"

He advises aspiring aviators: "Be willing and ready to make every connection you can, keep your focus on success, and don't be afraid to try avenues you had never considered when you started. If you really have a passion for aviation, there's a pathway for everyone!"

The A&E Expo not only showcases the achievement of 91²Ö¿â alumni but also aims to inspire the next generation of aviation and engineering professionals. As these Goodyear Blimp pilots demonstrate, the comprehensive education and unique opportunities provided by 91²Ö¿â's College of Aeronautics and Engineering can lead to extraordinary careers.
