At the 91²Ö¿â Airport, two alumni are proving that the sky's not the limit when it comes to helping animals in need.
Jim Sebastian, a 91²Ö¿â adjunct professor/check instructor and Southwest Airlines Captain, and David Poluga, 91²Ö¿â airport manager, have turned their passion for aviation into a mission of compassion. In 2012, they founded Props-4-Paws, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting local animal shelters.
"We feel the 91²Ö¿â Airport reflects the community that it serves, and the local community, the airport community, and the entire 91²Ö¿â community has partnered with us to help some animals who can't help themselves," Sebastian said.
What started as a modest initiative has soared to impressive heights. In its first year, Props-4-Paws collected and distributed 1,127 pounds of food and supplies. Last year, that number skyrocketed to 12,752 pounds. To date, the organization has delivered a staggering 63,474 pounds of aid to the and the .
Sebastian emphasized the broader impact of their work: "Props-4-Paws supplies much needed food to local shelters, but what we provide for the animals is the one thing they need most...a second chance."
Props-4-Paws largest fundraiser is this Saturday, September 7, at the A&E Expo at 91²Ö¿â Airport from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. At this event, Props-4-Paws sets up a donation booth in the hangar, accepting pet food, supplies, and monetary contributions. They also sell branded merchandise, with all proceeds going directly to shelter animals.
91²Ö¿â has thrown its full support behind the alumni-led initiative. Christina Bloebaum, Ph.D., dean of the College of Aeronautics and Engineering, praised the effort: "Jim and Dave exemplify the kind of community leadership we strive to instill in our students. They're using their professional platform to make a tangible difference in our community."
As Props-4-Paws approaches its next A&E Expo, Sebastian and Poluga remain committed to their mission. "Every pound of food and every dollar donated represents hope for an animal in need," Sebastian said. "We're just getting started."
