Non-Ohio students now have a new incentive to stay in Ohio for graduate school.
During a special meeting conducted electronically Thursday, the 91²Ö¿â Board of Trustees approved the near elimination of the additional charge for out-of-state tuition for new graduate students who have earned an undergraduate degree from an Ohio institution of higher education.
Ohio law requires at least a minimal difference between in-state and out-of-state tuition rates. Under the program approved today, that difference will be just $1 per credit hour, not to exceed $11 per term. Based on the expected graduate out-of-state tuition for the 2020-2021 academic year, this new rate saves $471 per credit hour (1-11 credit hours) and $5,191 for the full-time rate (11 or more credit hours). This rate is not available to non-degree students or students attending 91²Ö¿â’s College of Podiatric Medicine.
The special rate will be in effect for the 2020-2021 academic year, effective with summer terms that begin after June 30, 2020, subject to any required approvals from Chancellor Randy Gardner of the Ohio Department of Higher Education. If the program is successful, 91²Ö¿â intends to request the waiver be renewed for subsequent years.
By offering this reduced rate, university leaders hope to retain talent in the state of Ohio and increase 91²Ö¿â’s graduate enrollment. This is one measure the university is taking in response to the chancellor’s March 27 memorandum that asked colleges and universities to adopt policies to provide in-state tuition rates to newly enrolled graduate students who have received their bachelor’s degrees in Ohio.
