How do I declare or switch to a CCI major or minor?
If you’re a student who’s interested in declaring or switching to a major or minor in the College of Communication and Information, you can follow the steps below.
Current 91²Ö¿â StudentsIf you’ve already been admitted to 91²Ö¿â and have already declared a major, haven’t yet chosen a major (exploratory) or would just like to add on a minor, follow these steps:
- Explore the Majors and Minors we have to offer and find the right fit for you.
- Schedule an appointment with your current advisor to discuss the major or minor you’ve selected. If you’re already assigned a major in the College, you can find your advisor in our Advising & Graduation section. If you’re not yet in the College, you can find your current advisor in FlashLine under Student Dashboard > My Advisors.
- Once you’ve got the okay from your advisor, declare your CCI major or minor in FlashLine under Student > Resources > Advising and GPS > Change Undergraduate Program
New FreshmanIf you’re a new student applying to 91²Ö¿â for the first time and would like to declare a CCI major upon admission, follow these steps:
- Explore the Majors and Minors we have to offer and find the right fit for you.
- Follow the steps for applying as a Transfer Student and be sure to select your CCI major of interest when completing your application
Adding a Minor: Once you’ve been admitted, you can follow the instructions above (Current 91²Ö¿â Students) to add on a CCI minor, if you’d like.
Transfer, Transitioning & Former StudentsIf you’re transferring to 91²Ö¿â from another institution, transitioning from a regional campus or have taken classes at 91²Ö¿â in the past, follow these steps:
- Explore the Majors and Minors we have to offer and find the right fit for you.
- Follow the steps for applying as a Transfer Student and be sure to select your CCI major of interest when completing your application.
Adding a Minor: Once you’ve been admitted, you can follow the instructions above (Current 91²Ö¿â Students) to add on a CCI minor, if you’d like.

How do I change my major? Will changing my major effect my graduation date?
It is highly recommended that you schedule an appointment with an advisor before changing your major. Once you have done so, you can change your major in FlashLine. During your advising appointment, your advisor will be able to map out your degree requirements and provide a graduate date. You can check out our Major Change Guide for more information.

How long do I have to complete my major?
CCI majors have a sequence of courses that progress from developing skills in your major, to focusing on your specialization, to culminating experiences. Most students require 6 academic semesters to complete these courses in sequence. This does not include your Kent Core or Additional Major requirements. Meet with an advisor to map out your unique pathway to graduation.

Am I required to get an internship in order to graduate?

What are ways I can get involved in my new major?
While succeeding in the classroom is important, getting involved and engaged in your area of study is just as important! There are many ways to get involved within our college and schools. Check out our student involvement page on the CCI website.

Who will be my CCI advisor?
All our advisors can answer your questions and help guide you along your undergraduate path. You can find out more about advising in the Advising and Graduation section of the website.

Can I transfer credits from another university or college to my CCI major at 91²Ö¿â?
Please view the 91²Ö¿â Transfer Credit Guide to see how your transfer credits may be applied to your degree. If you have taken a class at another college or university that is not listed on the Transfer Credit Guide, you may meet with an Advisor to determine next steps. Please obtain a copy of the course syllabus prior to your meeting.
Please note that the School of Media and Journalism is accredited by ACEJMC and can accept a maximum 12 credit hours of major transfer coursework toward its majors. (The maximum of 12 credit hours does not include Kent Core classes, Additional Major requirements, or general electives).
