Supporting our Asian and Asian American community members is especially needed right now. Since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, many of us have experienced major changes in our lives, we have experienced added stress and/or anxiety, some have lost their job or have had their work hours reduced, we have felt isolation, we have had loved ones who became ill or became ill ourselves, and some of us have lost loved ones to this disease.
But with the rise in hate crimes and other incidents of anti-Asian bigotry toward the Asian and Asian American community in our country, our Asian and Asian American community members are experiencing additional fears and stressors. This week eight people, including six Asian women, were killed in Atlanta area spas. These murders follow months of verbal attacks, violent assaults, and beatings that ended in deaths across the country that have been directed at Asians and Asian American citizens.
These incidents are not only occurring in large cities. Students in our county have experienced verbal attacks and taunting since the pandemic began, with others blaming them for coronavirus or assuming they are not citizens since they are of Asian descent. Building a culture of belonging must remain one of our greatest priorities. We must continue to ensure that all of students feel welcome and safe.
To our students, faculty, staff, and community members who are Asian and Asian American, we recognize the pain and the fear these incidents of violence, hate and bias cause. We support you and are honored that you are part of our community. Flashes Take Care of Flashes.
