The Regional Campus Instructional Design (RCID) team shares regular Quick Tips to assist faculty in leveraging Canvas and other educational technology to support their teaching goals.
Now that the semester is fully underway, we wanted to reach out to see how things are going and remind you that you have a team of four instructional designers ready to support you.
Virtual Drop-in Hours for students are a popular way to increase attendance. Students can reach out to you without driving to campus or struggling to find your office. A good place to add a link is on the home page under instructor contact information.
The start of a new semester means updating and sharing your syllabi with your students. Canvas gives instructors a dedicated place to post their course syllabus and related information -- aptly named the “Syllabus†page -- which you and your students can access from the course navigation menu on the left.

We can leverage the Link Validator tool in Canvas to quickly identify broken links so that we can fix them before they become a problem for students.
Roll Call Attendance is a tool that allows instructors to take student attendance electronically via a list of student names or a seating chart grid. The Attendance tool can be used for both online and face-to-face courses.
Course accessibility is a time-sensitive activity. Throughout the course's development, you can take small steps to make course materials accessible, so when a student needs accommodation, it is available. Captioning videos can even help students who do not have an accommodation, for instance, if they do not know how to spell a term, cannot have the volume on, or simply learn better by reading.
We hope you are having a great first week of classes! For this week’s Quick Tip, we’re sending a reminder about the Canvas Dashboard and course enrollments. Make sure to bookmark the updated ticket links below as these have changed since last semester.
