Public Health Minors

Environmental Health Sciences for Natural Science Majors minor

The Environmental Health Sciences for Natural Science Majors minor is intended for students who have a strong interest or curricular focus in a natural science major. This includes students in a variety of majors including, but not limited to, biology, chemistry, geology, geography, physics, botany and zoology. The minor provides students with foundational concepts in environmental health as it relates to the broad field of public health.

Environmental Health Sciences for Non-Natural Science Majors minor

The Environmental Health Sciences for Non-Natural Science Majors minor is intended for students who have a strong interest or curricular focus in a natural science major. The minor provides students with foundational concepts in environmental health as it relates to the broad field of public health.

Health Services Administration minor

The Health Services Administration minor is intended for students that have a strong interest in concepts related to the management, ethics and practice of the administration of health services. Students complete a series of specific courses designed to enhance their knowledge in the area of health services, as well as courses geared for professional practice.

The minor will augment students' study in a variety of majors including, but not limited to, business, communications, nursing, psychology, sociology, public health and health and human services.

Health and Technologies and Informatics minor

The Health and Technologies and Informatics minor provides students with knowledge and skills in public health and information technology. Students who are interested in public health face new challenges and opportunities with technology. Conversely, students in other fields related to technology are often presented with challenges and opportunities related to public health. Drawing on an interdisciplinary focus of public health, education, communication, geography, information, and educational technology, students increase their skill set for practice in an information-intensive health care environment.

Students in this minor will gain knowledge on how information technology is used to organize and analyze health records, health information databases and trends in technology to improve healthcare outcomes.  For students with natural science, communication, business, computer, or information technology degrees, the minor courses will expose them to the uniqueness and complexity of work processes in public health and healthcare.

Public Health minor

The Public Health minor integrates key aspects of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organized efforts and informed choices of society, organizations, communities and individuals. Students who choose to augment their major by adding the public health minor increase their awareness of emerging issues in public health, the social and behavioral aspects of preventing disease, environmental health concepts, the changing U.S. health care system and the monitoring of diseases in the community through applied public health research.
