Important information for admitted and incoming students

Incoming undergraduate and graduate students will find important information below to help you navigate the summer months and the first few days in your new musical and academic home.

Music Minors: Music Theory and Piano Placements

Music Theory Placement

Required for admitted Music Minors.
Optional for admitted World Music and Jazz Studies Minors. Contact Gerrey Noh if you're interested in taking the Music Theory Placement.

Your results do NOT affect your admission to the music program.

Details

After successful completion of your audition and admittance to the Glauser School, you'll receive information about taking the Music Theory Placement prior to registering for classes during Destination 91�ֿ�.
The placement will be given online and you'll be notified how to access it. It will take 45 minutes (15 minutes aural and 30 minutes written).
After you receive your results and the recommendation is for placement in Music Rudiments, you'll be given the option to retake the Music Theory Placement later in the summer. Study materials will be provided by our Music Theory department.

Piano Placement

Piano Placement is optional for all admitted music minors. If you are interested in evaluation for piano placement, please contact Dr. Donna Lee at dlee3@kent.edu.

GRADUATE INFORMATION

Graduate Student Music Theory Placement Exam

GRADUATE STUDENT MUSIC THEORY PLACEMENT EXAM

All entering masters and doctoral students take a placement exam in music theory.
The exam must be taken before the start of enrollment in a graduate degree program.
Graduate theory coursework required as a result of this examination will be counted toward the degree requirements.
The examination is given in August before the fall semester begins.

FALL 2023

Online testing only.
The exam will be available beginning Saturday, Aug. 19 at 8:00 a.m. and remain available until 10 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 20.

EXAM DETAILS

The exam consists of three parts:

Introduction and Sound Check (15 minutes)
Aural Skills (15 minutes)
Written Skills (30 minutes)
Analysis (120 minutes)

Students should set aside a three-hour time block for the entire process.

Technology requirements: All students should have access to a reliable internet connection and Google Chrome browser. Cell phones and small tablets are not appropriate for viewing large scores. Students are encouraged to use a laptop or a desktop computer.
