Mathematics Education - B.S.E. Middle Childhood

The Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Middle Childhood Education (MCED) prepares future teachers to teach students in grades 4 to 9.

There are six (6) required hours of mathematics education courses in the MCED program. Students enrolled in MCED mathematics education courses are provided experiences in the university classroom and field that enhance their understanding of students’ mathematical thinking in the pre-adolescent years and appropriate pedagogies to facilitate engagement in more sophisticated mathematical thinking during this pivotal age.

Mathematics Education Courses

MCED 30001: Teaching Mathematics in Middle Childhood I

Examine issues and trends in mathematics and mathematics education. Theories of the teaching and learning of mathematics will be addressed within the context of problem solving, communications, reasoning and connections with other disciplines [3 Credit Hours].

MCED 40001: Teaching Mathematics in Middle Childhood II

To develop knowledge of the theories, materials and methods used to teach mathematics in the contemporary classroom for grades 4-9 and develop skill in their use [3 Credit Hours].

MCED 40045/50045: Teaching Mathematics in the Intermediate Years, Grades 4-5

Generally sought by those completing ECED program requirements. To develop knowledge of the theories, materials and methods used to teach mathematics in the contemporary classroom for grades 4-5 and develop skill in their use.
