Graduate Awards and Scholarships
Departmental and Student Society Graduate Student Awards
A number of scholarships are available to 91²Ö¿â Earth Sciences graduate students through the Department of Earth Sciences through endowed funds. Donations to any of the scholarship accounts are gratefully accepted. They may be sent to the Department of Earth Sciences, 91²Ö¿â, Kent OH 44242, or on our secure website. Donations will be deposited into the appropriate Foundation Account where they will augment the funds used to award those scholarships. Details regarding graduate scholarships and awards are given below. Please note that Masters students must have successfully defended a research proposal to be eligible for these awards. Information about these awards can be obtained in the Department of Earth Sciences office.

Dr. Rodney Feldmann passed away on May 1, 2024. He was an eminent scholar, teacher, mentor, and a wonderful and kind individual.
Dr. Feldmann will be missed by all, but his enormous impact on KSU Geology will endure. If you would like to donate to the new Rodney Feldmann Memorial Scholarship, click here for further instructions, or send checks directly to the Department of Earth Sciences (221 McGilvrey Hall, 325 S. Graduate Research Scholarships
A monetary award presented to Earth Sciences graduate students based upon their research support needs, academic standing, and the quality of their thesis/dissertation project. NOTE: MS Research proposal must have been successfully defended.
Katherine L. Moulton Memorial Scholarship
A monetary award presented annually to an Earth Sciences graduate student based on excellence in research.
Sigma Gamma Epsilon Geology Graduate Student Research Scholarship
A monetary award presented to Earth Sciences graduate students who need funding for a research project, and are a current member of SGE. Download PDF Application Form
School of Hard Rocks Scholarship
A monetary award presented to Earth Sciences graduate students based upon their research support needs, academic standing, and the quality of their thesis/dissertation project.
Outstanding M.S. Student
A certificate presented to an academically superior graduate student who, in the current academic year, obtains the M.S. degree in Geology and who is judged by the faculty to be the outstanding M.S. student.
Outstanding Ph.D. Student
A certificate presented to an academically superior graduate student who, in the current academic year, obtains the Ph.D. degree in Applied Geology and who is judged by the faculty to be the outstanding Ph.D. student.
Yoram Eckstein Scholarship
A $1,000.00 scholarship available on a competitive basis to graduate students working on water research related to groundwater flow and/or contaminant transport for their MS or Ph.D. The award should be used for tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies, and travel costs. Applicants should provide the Chair a one-page description of their research project, including the project objectives and a description of how they plan to use the money of the award. The applicant should also include a letter of support from their supervising faculty. Please submit these to Kelly Thomasson at kthomass@kent.edu by April 15.
External Grants, Fellowships and Scholarships
In an effort to encourage advanced education in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) the (OSGC) offers financial support through competitively awarded fellowship opportunities.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . The NERRS Graduate Research Fellowship Program is one of the largest graduate programs supported by NOAA. Fellows conduct their research within a National Estuarine Research Reserve and gain hands-on experience by engaging with reserve staff and participating in their host reserve's research, education, stewardship and training programs.
