Students from Dr. Lydia Rose’s sociology classes recently filled the Slak Shak with samples of culture, music, food and art from 30 African countries during a recent culture fair held on the East Liverpool campus.
There were 34 posters submitted and displayed at the fair. Visitors were able to get “passports” stamped at each country they visited, making them eligible for door prizes. Winners of the poster competition included Tiffany Durham, most creative, for her poster about Cameroon; Brandon Ferry, most informative, for his poster on Egypt; and Melissa Bleininger, overall best poster, for her submission about Gabon.
There were also 43 papers submitted for judging. Winners included Tiffany Durham, most creative, for “Cameroon Africa: The Rule of Witchcraft and Supersititions;” Kris Meeusen, most informative, for “Morocco: The Family Structure: Rural Families Compared to Urban Families;” and Colleen Herbert, overall best, for “South Sudan, Africa: The Newest Country in the World.”
Door prizes were donated by Aegis Mechanicals, D&P Auto Repair, Endless Tan, Bob & Robin’s Flowers and Ponderosa Steakhouse.
Dr. Jack Vazzana, Associate Professor of Sociology, is a visual sociologist and took photos at the event.
The countries represented at the fair included Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Equiforia Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Liberia, Madagascar, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, South Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
