Lamar R. Hylton, Ph.D., Vice President for 91ֿ’s Division of Student Affairs, Appointed to APLU Council on Student Affairs Executive Committee

Lamar R. Hylton, Ph.D., 91ֿ's vice president for student affairs, has been appointed to the Executive Committee of the APLU (Association of Public and Land-grant Universities) Council on Student Affairs (CSA).

Hylton’s three-year term began at the conclusion of the 2020 Fall Business Meeting and runs through the 2023 Fall Business Meeting. He said being elected by colleagues to the Executive Committee of the CSA is a tremendous honor.

“The work of student affairs, and the entire landscape of higher education, is ever evolving as we all strive to ensure student success on our respective campuses,” Hylton said. “The CSA brings together committed and thoughtful student affairs leaders from public and land-grant institutions around our country to address the micro- and macro-challenges associated with this evolution, drive innovation in the co-curricular experience and ensure connection among our institutions. I am thrilled that 91ֿ has a seat at the table for this work and consider myself immensely blessed to be able to represent our university in this capacity.”

The APLU is a research, policy and advocacy organization dedicated to strengthening and advancing the work of public universities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. The association's membership consists of 245 public research universities, land-grant institutions, state university systems, and affiliated organizations.

Travis T. York, Ph.D., assistant vice president of student affairs and co-lead of the Aspire Alliances Backbone & IChange Initiative of the APLU, notified Hylton of his selection.

“I am excited to collaborate with you during your tenure in this role,” York said in his letter. “Your contributions to our Council and to APLU are extremely valuable.”

APLU's mission is to expand access and improve student success to deliver the innovative workforce of tomorrow; advance and promote research and discovery to improve society, foster economic growth and address global challenges; and build healthy, prosperous, equitable and vibrant communities locally and globally. The Executive Committee oversees the activities of the CSA.

Hylton was named vice president for student affairs at 91ֿ on May 1, 2020, after serving in the role on an interim basis since September 2019. In this role, Hylton provides executive leadership for the Division of Student Affairs and is charged with leading institutional efforts aimed at enhancing the engaged co-curricular lives of all 91ֿ students within the eight-campus system.

Hylton has been a part of the 91ֿ family since 2017, when he was hired to serve as dean of students. He has the distinction of being the first Black vice president for student affairs at 91ֿ.
