Quick Tip: More Options Available - Settings in Canvas

POSTED: Nov. 02, 2022

This week we want to show some Canvas course options that are easy to implement but could impact you and your students significantly.

Open your Canvas course and navigate to the Settings link in the Course Navigation menu on the left. From here, scroll to the bottom of the Course Details tab and click More Options. Of the 10 options that are there, these are the most impactful:

  • This option is on by default and will appear after five students have completed the assignment.  Instructors of small classes should be especially concerned that students could figure out their classmates' grades if grade distribution graphs are visible.

  • If you do not want students to see the running total for your course, you can hide the Total column.  Hiding the totals will also disable viewing of the Assignment Groups/categories in the gradebook.

  • Adding a link to your announcements on the homepage will help them stand out. The more you choose to show, however, the more your homepage content will move down, so we recommend limiting this to no more than two or three.

  • Be aware of this setting. By default, students can reply to your course announcements. If students are asking questions there and you are not aware, they will become frustrated.

Tip: Enable the “Announcements Created By You†to receive email notifications when students reply to announcements you’ve created in your courses.

  • Discussion and group settings
By default, students can create new discussion topics (forums), edit or delete their own discussion posts, and organize their own groups. If you do not want students to be able to do these things, you can deselect these options to disable them.
