Kyah Jefferies is a junior American Sign Language Major and employee in RecWell at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC).. She works as an Operations Specialist, as well as a Guest Services Supervisor. Kyah spoke about her satisfaction with the work she does, and how it will prepare her for her future. Kyah’s job involves regularly working with patrons at the front desk. She said the job is varied, but that she enjoys it. “I interact with a lot of patrons, so it's a lot of customer service based on talking to them, selling memberships, dealing with money, etc..All the patrons getting to know them and their stories is interesting.”
Kyah highlighted the experience she’s gained while working. She said a lot of the work she does makes her more confident for the future. She also pointed out how the professional staff helped her in her duties. “It's helped me be in situations that I normally wouldn't be in like there's a lot of emergency situations that I haven't dealt with or just dealing with customers. It helps me be prepared for certain questions, like in the future or whatever job I do.” Kyah said. “I like the people that I work with. I like the professional staff. They're really warm and welcoming.”
Kyah said she enjoyed Kent because of its unique location, and how it met her specific needs. “I chose to come to Kent because it was not too close to home, but also not too far from home. And there's only a limited number of schools like in the area that have the major that I'm in.”
Kyah said she heard good things about RecWell from a friend and decided to check it out. She's been working at SRWC ever since. “I was recommended to work here by a friend my freshman year. She ended up transferring schools, but I still went through with it and I'm happy that I did.”
A lot of Kyah’s friends are people that she met working at the SRWC. She said it was a great place to be when first starting as a first - year student at the university. “I like it more now than when I started working at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center because this is where I met all my friends. I didn't know too many people, so this was a good way to meet and interact with more people that you wouldn't normally see.”
