A new degree program titled the Master of Arts in Journalism Education received its final approval from Ohio’s Department of Higher Education this summer. Since 2007, we have been training journalism educators in a concentration of the Master of Arts degree in Media and Journalism. Starting this fall, students are pursuing a standalone degree in journalism education.
This shift from a concentration to a standalone degree might seem minor but it gives our graduate program more focus and flexibility. Ours is the only master’s program solely dedicated to journalism education.
Students are no longer required to complete a capstone professional project. Instead, they will build a professional portfolio using work from the courses they complete. They will take six required courses and four electives, compared to eight required courses and three electives in the concentration. The total hours required to complete the degree is decreasing by three to 30 credit hours.
Students who already have a master’s degree or who are looking for a targeted credential can pursue a four-course (12 credit hour) graduate certificate in journalism education.
All courses are delivered online in an asynchronous mode but follow 91²Ö¿â’s academic calendar. For more information about these graduate programs, visit the Journalism Education master's degree page.
