Minor in Italian Studies

91²Ö¿â's Minor in Italian Studies offers students a comprehensive exploration of the Italian language, culture, and history. The program combines language acquisition with the study of Italian literature, art, cinema, and contemporary social issues, fostering a deeper understanding of Italy’s contributions to global culture. This minor complements a variety of majors, enriching students' academic experiences and preparing them for careers in education, international relations, tourism, and cultural exchange. Graduates with this minor are well-equipped to engage in cross-cultural dialogues and contribute meaningfully in diverse professional environments.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates of this program will be able to:

  1. Understand Italian culture through interdisciplinary contexts to produce a personal, informed and critical understanding of Italy.
  2. Demonstrate extensive knowledge of Italian culture and society and develop the ability to grasp cultural, social, artistic, political, historical, economic issues and more relevant to Italy and Italians.
  3. Identify, interpret, and explain the major developments and forces shaping Italian social, political and cultural history.
  4. Understand, discuss and evaluate the role of key trends and works in Italian literature, cinema and other forms of cultural production.
Admissions for Italian Studies - Minor

Admission Requirements

Admission to a minor is open to students declared in a bachelor’s degree, the A.A.B. or A.A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree (not Individualized Program major). Students declared only in the A.A. or A.S. degree or the A.T.S. degree in Individualized Program may not declare a minor. Students may not pursue a minor and a major in the same discipline.

International experience (xxx89) courses taken through 91²Ö¿â's Florence program may be included with the permission of the director of the Italian Studies minor. No more than six credit hours can be taken from the same course subject.

  • No more than 6 credit hours of a special topics (xxx95) course can count toward the minor requirements.
  • Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be upper-division coursework (30000 and 40000 level).
  • Minimum 6 credit hours in the minor must be outside of the course requirements for any major or other minor the student is pursuing.
  • Minimum 50 percent of the total credit hours for the minor must be taken at 91²Ö¿â (in residence).
