CJ Venable, College of Communication and Information, Kyle Inselman and Nick Thuot, co-authored a section of a book, "Negotiating Fit while 'Misfit': Three Ways Trans Professionals Navigate Student Affairs," Debunking the Myth of Job Fit in Higher Education and Student Affairs, 1st Edition, (Sterling, VA: Stylus Publishing), Brian J. Reece, Vu T. Tran, Elliott N. DeVore, & Gabby Porcaro (Eds.), (2019), 167-192.

This chapter explores the pernicious effects of cisgenderism, a form of structural oppression that makes cisgender individuals the norm and positions trans people as misfits in that system, upon the field of higher education and student affairs. Venable, Inselman, and Thuot explore how higher education has been structured to exclude trans student affairs professionals, resulting in varying methods of managing this exclusion. The authors explore collusion with, resistance to, and disruption of institutional cisgenderism and its effects on how trans professionals fit in higher education.
