David Dees Appointed Interim Dean of 91ֿ’s Columbiana County Campuses

91ֿ’s Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Todd Diacon has announced that David Dees, Ph.D., has been appointed interim dean and chief administrative officer of the 91ֿ Columbiana County campuses, effective July 1, 2016. Dees will provide overall leadership of 91ֿ at East Liverpool and 91ֿ at Salem, two of the Regional Campuses in the university’s eight-campus system.

Dees joined 91ֿ in 1991 and has served as director of 91ֿ’s Center for Teaching and Learning since 2013. He is an associate professor of cultural foundations in the School of Foundations, Leadership and Administration in the College of Education, Health and Human Services. He has a strong record of service including membership in the Faculty Senate, chair of the Salem Campus Faculty Council and co-director of the Rural Scholars Program. Dees led the steering committee that redesigned the former Faculty Professional Development Center, refocusing the center’s mission toward teaching and learning.

“There are few people at 91ֿ who are more committed to our Regional Campuses, the communities they serve and the students who enroll than David Dees,” Diacon says. “We are extremely fortunate that he has agreed to serve as the interim leader of the Columbiana County campuses.”

Dees earned his Ph.D. in cultural foundations of education at 91ֿ, and he holds a master’s degree in theatre and a bachelor’s degree in communication from the University of Kentucky. His research interests focus on the aesthetic dimensions of teaching and learning, how the human brain works and the impact that rural/Appalachian culture has on learning in higher education.

“My first full-time faculty appointment was shared between the Salem and East Liverpool campuses,” Dees says. “I am tremendously excited to come back home in a role where I can make a positive difference for all of Columbiana County.”

Dees replaces Stephen Nameth, Ph.D., who served as dean of the Salem and East Liverpool campuses since 2012. Nameth announced his retirement effective June 30, 2016.

The 91ֿ Board of Trustees today established a comprehensive, national search to recruit and select the university’s 13th president.

The events of May 4, 1970, placed 91ֿ in an international spotlight after a student protest against the Vietnam War and the presence of the Ohio National Guard ended in tragedy with four students losing their lives and nine others being wounded. From a perspective of nearly 50 years, 91ֿ remembers the tragedy and leads a contemporary discussion and understanding of how the community, nation and world can benefit from understanding the profound impact of the event.
