Friday, September 17 & Saturday, September 18, 2021

Virtual Conference- Zoom

A virtual keynote talk followed by a one-day workshop on peace education will be held as part of 91²Ö¿â’s celebration of the annual International Day of Peace. The event will feature:

  • A keynote talk with Dr. Barbara Wien (American University) and Mainlehwon Vonhm (George Mason University) as they speak on the importance of peace education.
  • Roundtables with various presenters discussing peace education in practice.

The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. Two decades later, in 2001, the General Assembly unanimously voted to designate the Day as a period of non-violence and cease-fire. The theme for this year’s International Day of Peace is ‘Recovering Better for an Equitable and Sustainable World’. As part of our contribution to the Day of Peace, the Read Center for International and Intercultural Education and the School of Peace and Conflict Studies at 91²Ö¿â will be holding a virtual workshop on the theme of ‘Peace Education for an Equitable and Sustainable World: Local and Global Perspectives’.

This conference will bring together experts and practitioners to explore the challenges and opportunities presented for peace education in the aftermath of a global pandemic. This pandemic has not only presented new pedagogical challenges, but also revealed stark inequalities in access to healthcare and vaccines; racial, gender and class disparities; political polarization and more. At the same time, the era of the pandemic has also highlighted the potentials of new and emerging technologies for the pedagogy and practice of peace; the ability of new local and transnational social movements to challenge the status quo; and the intersection between questions of health, race, gender, education, peace, development, ecology and militarism.

Presenters and participants will explore how these varied trends are influencing the pedagogy of peace; and how practitioners of peace education can contribute to the progressive and peaceful change they – and their students - want to bring about in a newly plastic world.
